A bottle containing a quantity of alcohol, standing upon the mantel, in the kitchen of Mrs. J. H. Stanton, of this place, caused what might have proved a very serious conflagration on Thursday, the 21st inst [21 Jan 1897], had it not been for the quick wit of the aforesaid lady. Mrs. Stanton, who had been engaged in washing dishes, in her endeavor to remove some article from the mantel, which runs horizontal with a large cook stove, the bottle was overturned and the contents became ignited, the flames reaching the ceiling of the room, she at once threw the contents of her dishpan upon the fire and succeeded in extinguishing the flames.
