She remembers her grandfather. He had a beard. She didn't like to kiss him b/c he chewed tobacco and it would run down his beard.
He was a "black dirt" farmer. He grew onions, celery and ?.
When she knew him, he was older and his grandson David Rhodes had moved into his house and taken it over.
He was illiterate.
